Tips on How to Choose the Perfect Elopement Destination
There are a few factors to consider when it comes to your elopement destination. Some couples already have an idea of what kind of ceremony backdrop they’re looking for or a specific location that’s sentimental to them. But for those of you that don’t have all the details ironed out in advance, here’s a few things to keep in mind.
<<< If you’re considering a beach elopement, be sure to read our planning guide! >>>
What type of landscape makes you the most happy?
For some of our couples, that’s the mountains, cliffside beaches or canyon overlooks. But for you it could be the city of Oia, a magical waterfall or the crystal blue waters of Lake Louise. Not sure exactly what makes you most happy? Think of any previous trips you’ve taken and what types of locations you gravitate towards without even paying attention! Think about the areas you’ve been to that inspire you or make you feel at home. The best part about eloping is that you can consider some of the most intimate, jaw-dropping locations (some that offer multiple types of scenery!) around the world as the setting for where you say your vows.
What time of year are you eloping?
This is probably one of the biggest factors when considering options for your elopement. Choosing a season is an important part of the wedding planning process as it will determine what you wear, activities and accessibility of outdoor areas! Will your location have snow, cooler temperatures or cloudy weather during the months you’re considering? Or are you planning an elopement during hurricane season for a tropical hotspot? What about international travel restrictions — are any currently in place that can limit you from getting there? Be honest with yourself when it comes to deciding what’s right for the two of you. If you detest being cold, then planning a winter elopement is probably not going to feel like the best decision when your shivering outside while reading your vows. The good part is that we can help you determine the best options based on the backdrop you’re aiming for and the time of year you’re planning for!
Will you be bringing along any guests, children or pets?
Once you’ve landed on the season and the scenery, it’s time to think about how to get that magical location. Some of the most breathtaking areas around the world may require you to book a long flight or hike through some tough terrain. Determine just how much or how far you’re willing to travel to get to that dream destination, so we can narrow down the available options. If you’re planning on inviting guests, bringing your children or pets, you’ll also want to keep in mind how accessible your location is for them! Some true adventure elopements can be challenging with little ones, and some parks may not allow furry friends to accompany you. Make sure that you’re considering what the experience will be like for them so you can save yourself the headache later. Read more about eloping with your pets here.
Are you looking to combine your elopement and honeymoon experience?
Once the ceremony is over, what do you want to do? You’ll have the rest of the day to enjoy your elopement location, or you can start the honeymoon right away! Make a list of some activities that you’d love to do while you’re at that dreamy destination. Whether your elopement is a short trip or an extended one, be sure to budget enough time to soak in the scenery together. Make sure you don’t cram too many activities into your shorter trip so you don’t feel rushed or stressed in any way!
Does this location feel special to you?
At the end of the day, your elopement is going to be one of your favorite memories! One way to add an additional layer of intention to your elopement celebration is choosing a destination that is unique to both of you. Perhaps it’s a place that the two of you have traveled to together or somewhere that you’ve always dreamt about visiting! No matter where you decide, your elopement spot is going to hold a special place in your heart forever.
